LTO-Still Current After All These Years

By Glenn Garrahan, Director HPE Business, Tributary Systems

 Recently Announced-LTO 11 and LTO12

Just last October, the LTO Consortium announced that two new generations of LTO were to be added to the product roadmap, LTO 11 and LTO 12. This was the first major addition to the LTO product line since 2014, when the roadmap was extended to generation 10. These products are expected to push the availabilty of LTO into the late 2020’s. Just as interesting, LTO 12 is projected to have a native capacity of 192 TB or 480 TB compressed per cartridge!  Imagine, half a petabyte of data on a single cartridge you can hold in the palm of your hand.

A little history…

LTO Ultrium tape was first made available to the marketplace in 2000. Developed and controlled by a consortium of companies, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, IBM, and Quantum, LTO quickly became the dominate enterprise tape drive type, competing favorably with DAT, DLT, AIT, and all other mid-range devices. Actually, both DLT and AIT are no longer in production, having been entirely displaced by LTO.

Currently LTO is in its eighth generation, with the release of LTO 8 last year. LTO 8 media will provide a native capacity of 12 TB per cartridge (30 TB compressed) at a cost of pennies per gigabyte. Each generation of LTO has enhanced both media capacity and speed, while allowing for media compatibility with previous generations. Protection of customer investment in LTO is a major criterion of the product line; the recent announcement continues this tradition.

Tape in the Cloud

Tape in the “Cloud”- of course! Many cloud data centers own massive tape libraries for long-term lowest-cost data storage. Scientific users combining cloud and tape include CERN, the Argonne National Laboratory, and NASA. In broadcasting, where absolutely massive amounts of digital film and television data require archiving, The Discovery Network is a top example. In education, USC (University of Southern California) uses tape-based storage to archive digital holdings in the cloud. Importantly, tape allows reduced size of Cloud data repositories by allowing “cold” data to be move off more expensive disk. Tape and “Cloud” are partners, not adversaries….

LTO Specifically for HPE NonStop Customers

Tributary Systems, HPE’s OEM Tape supplier, first introduced LTO 2 for attachment to HPE NonStop servers in 2003. Since then, five generations of LTO have been qualified by Tributary Systems, and future qualifications are in the planning stages. For the past 15 years, LTO tape drives have proven to be extremely reliable and robust while managing big data for the world’s most demanding customers. Today, LTO is the only tape technology HPE NonStop continues to employ in mission critical server applications.

And when you need HPE NonStop Server to Cloud Backup, Tributary has your solution ready now!

For NonStop customers requiring Cloud Backup, Tributary System’s Cloud Object Storage is the solution. Employing advanced IBM COS technology coupled with TSI’s proven Storage Director as the “front end”, NonStop customers can transparently take advantage of Cloud Object Storage (COS) without any changes to their NonStop applications.

Storage Director, is a policy-based, tiered, and virtualized software product especially designed for backup which can be seamlessly integrated with any media, including tapes, disk drives, virtual environments and NonStop or other proprietary server environments, plus open systems. Storage Director can group data into different pools and apply different protection policies at different times across any storage medium simultaneously. TSI has gained a massive strategic edge as it has entered into a synergistic partnership with IBM to provide their latest Cloud Object Storage technology. Combining the capabilities of Storage Director while endorsing long-term archival to Object Storage is where TSI sees the data backup and retention market evolving. Tributary is the only company in the marketplace that can backup all NonStop mission-critical servers using a single solution. In addition to Storage Director’s AES 256-bit encryption, data is also erasure-coded in the storage tier. From a performance standpoint, Tributary’s solution can ingest data at a rate of 12TB per hour and restore at about 8.5TB per hour. Should a flash storage be used in the cache layer, the ingestion rate goes up to 37TB per hour and restores at 35TB per hour; these are metrics that are unmatched in the market. Thus, Tributary’s IP, when combined with IBM’s Cloud Object Storage solution, imparts exclusive cutting-edge data storage and management capabilities that can be well extended beyond public cloud models—into hybrid and on- premise environments—and also offers double-layered security for NonStop clients.

Availability Digest Says Save Your Data Center by Creating Chaos

Mission-critical application outages have plagued companies since the dawn of the Internet. So much of our economy is driven by online ecommerce that any system outage often exacts a major cost to the company suffering downtime. Even moving critical applications to the cloud does not resolve the issue. Clouds fail, too.

Large enterprises now have started to break their systems on purpose to smoke out weaknesses. The intent is to determine the impact of a particular outage and how to harden the systems before failures catch them unprepared. This is called ‘chaos engineering.’ “Saving Data Centers by Creating Chaos” introduces the technique and discusses Netflix’s use of chaos engineering via Chaos Monkey, Failure Injection Training (FIT) and Gremlin, a variety of tools and platforms that allowed Netflix to increase the reliability of its sites by a factor of ten.

In addition to “Chaos Engineering,” read the articles below in the Availability Digest.

The Future is Decentralized Data Storage – Decentralized data storage is a model of networked online storage in which data is stored on multiple computers. It does not directly employ dedicated servers for the actual storage of data, thereby eliminating the need for a significant hardware investment. Rather, each node contributes storage that may be in excess of what it actually is using. A node in the decentralized storage network can both consume and contribute data storage to the cloud. Decentralized storage offers a more secure, efficient, and scalable solution to a data-hungry world. Decentralized storage has the potential to provide the immense scalability required to meet the needs of the billions of devices that will be connected to the Internet. There is no single point of failure that can take down the storage system.

FedEx Exposes Details on Thousands – An unsecured Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) server affiliated with FedEx exposed the personal information of tens of thousands of FedEx users. With no password required for access, hackers were able to obtain all of the information stored on the server from 2008 to 2015. This included names, addresses, phone numbers, customer signatures, drivers’ licenses, national ID cards, voting cards, medical insurance cards, and credit cards. The server had been set to “public access” and had been easily accessible for years.

Cloud-to-Cloud Backup – Cloud computing has the advantage of eliminating the need for dedicated servers for the purpose of application processing. Whether public or private, the cloud provides the scalability necessary to support an application. If the application load should suddenly increase, the cloud can provide additional processing resources. When the increased load diminishes, the cloud can recover those resources and use them for other purposes. However, clouds on occasion do fail; and application data stored in the cloud potentially can be lost. It is therefore important to back up that data so that it can be recovered in the event of a cloud failure. Though cloud data can be backed up by on-site backup hardware, it makes more sense to back up the data in another cloud. Cloud-to-cloud backup is the practice of copying data that is stored on one cloud to another cloud.

XYPRO - GDPR – How to Comply in an HPE NonStop Server Environment

No one should suffer from the illusion that there’s a silver bullet that will effortlessly make an organization 100% secure and compliant with every security-related framework. Identifying your assets and building your security strategy around those assets is the only true way to mitigate risk. Identification is key. If you don’t know what data you possess, where it resides, what you are protecting and why you are protecting it, it becomes difficult to deploy an effective strategy and measure compliance to it. GDPR makes identifying your assets critically important.

So how can you make your HPE NonStop environment compliant with the GDPR’s technical security regulations and demonstrate its ongoing compliance with them?

 Let’s break it down

The New Reality:

Facing Security Challenges in the World of Hybrid IT

Hybrid IT in a Nutshell

Hybrid IT can be defined as the mix of IT infrastructure platforms  (legacy on-premise and private/public hybrid clouds) that an enterprise uses to satisfy its application workload and data needs.

There are several factors that have driven the adoption of hybrid IT infrastructures, including the need to maintain control of data, the cost effectiveness of cloud components, such as software-as-a-service and database-as-a-service, and the desire for an IT department to respond as quickly as possible to rapidly changing business needs.

This is why open technologies have become dominant, because more and more users and vendors take the open source approach when building their platform infrastructures. Hybrid IT is not even just about cloud, it’s also about traditional IT and legacy applications. It’s essential to ensure that legacy applications, which usually deal with core business functions, are able to exchange information with cloud applications and databases.

As hybrid platforms become ubiquitous (NonStop-X/Unix/Virtual NonStop), so do the security and compliance challenges they face.

Security Challenges Facing Hybrid IT

In an increasingly digital business environment, where change is a constant and there are ever-increasing demands to deploy new applications faster, older technology can be hard to scale and slow to change. Managing and securing a mix of IT infrastructures can be costly and complicated, especially when data can reside nearly anywhere

Some of the largest obstacles for creating a seamless hybrid IT environment include inadequate compliance, lack of encryption,  insufficient risk assessment & security management, failure to authenticate and identify, unprotected APIs, poor data redundancy, data leakage and many other threats.

While we could go into extensive detail on any one of these challenges, let's focus on three critical areas:

- Compliance Challenges on Hybrid IT

Maintaining and demonstrating compliance can be more difficult with a hybrid IT infrastructure. Not only do you have to ensure that your public cloud provider and private cloud are in compliance, but you also must demonstrate that the means of coordination between the two clouds is compliant.

For example, you may be able to demonstrate that both your internal systems and your cloud provider are compliant with PCI DSS. But, with the introduction of a hybrid IT infrastructure, you also have to ensure that the data moving between two clouds is protected.

Additionally, you'll need to ensure that data is not transferred from a compliant database on a private cloud to a less secure storage system in a public cloud. The methods you use to prevent a leak on an internal system may not directly translate to an external one.

- Risk Management on Hybrid IT

From a business perspective, information security is about managing risk. Hybrid IT uses new APIs, requires complex network configurations, and pushes the limits of traditional system administrators' knowledge and abilities.

These factors introduce new types of threats. Cloud computing is neither more nor less secure than internal infrastructures, but hybrid cloud is a complex system that administrators have limited experience in managing, and this naturally creates risk.

- Security Management on Hybrid IT

Existing security controls such as authentication, authorization and identity management will need to work in both the private and public cloud. There are a couple of options to integrate hybrid cloud security protocols, either replicate controls in both clouds and keep security data synchronized, or use an identity management service that provides a single service to systems running in either cloud.

You must also allocate sufficient time during your planning and implementation phases to address what could be fairly complex integration issues.

As NonStop systems move into the x86 platform, more applications will likely be ported to OSS. This means that after an x86 migration, the availability of open source tools being placed in environments in which they could not previously be placed will increase dramatically.

Ensuring that your system is compliant and secure will become an even more complex endeavor.

Implementing a hybrid cloud introduces more than just technical challenges; IT administrators also must also address security issues.

Protect-X® - The Compliance & Security Hardening Solution Built for Hybrid IT

Protect-X® is a browser-based, automated security hardening solution using the latest JavaScript technologies.  It supports HPE NonStop/X, Virtual NonStop and UNIX platforms.  Wholly developed by CSP, Protect X® is built using agent-less design so there is nothing to install on your NonStop servers.  All security is managed off-platform, via very fast and very strong encrypted connections.

Because Protect-X® was built with Virtual NonStop and open source applications in mind, it is the perfect tool to ensure that your hybrid infrastructure is compliant and secure. Protect-X® allows you to easily ensure compliance, assess risk and manage security of your hybrid platforms.

Protect-X®:

·        Allows a single security compliance policy to be automatically propagated across hybrid systems, such as NonStop Servers and Unix Servers

·        Allows delegation of tasks and makes security compliance changes only after approval by the responsible administrator

Protect-X® user interface

The Protect-X® interface features an at-a-glance Dashboard that calls attention to key metrics and gives quick access to related functions. Protect-X® allows users with the appropriate permissions to:

·        Check how well a monitored system complies with hardening policies globally or at the individual rule set level

·        Make changes to bring a monitored system into compliance with hardening policies, either once or repeatedly (on a scheduled basis)

·        Create custom versions of hardening policies and check how well a system complies with them

·        Produce informative reports and share them with external parties

·        Verify current users’ access to critical resources and identify possible vulnerabilities posed by that access

·        Manage and monitor changes to file permissions, users, groups, aliases, and Safeguard global settings for monitored systems, enforcing changes once or on a customized schedule

One of the key advantages of Protect-X® is that once configured, non-experts can ensure compliance standards are being properly maintained.  Any changes requested must be authorized by an expert administrator before they can be implemented.

Protect-X® is a powerful tool that has the ability to automatically implement compliance policies across different environments and IT architectures. It can be completely customized to suit your specific needs. It places all the power in your hands, but simplifies and automates many routine tasks.

Protect-X® can be trialed on our test site (www.cspsecurity.com) or on your own site as preferred:

NTI – it’s a hybrid IT of NonStop and Open.

DRNet and DRNET/OPEN help
make the journey to hybrid easy!

This past month the topic that continues to generate the most interest among NonStop users is the HPE message of a journey to hybrid IT. This is a key message for HPE as it underpins all the development that the company is currently doing – and HPE is beginning to see the results of its efforts as both users and industry analysts are paying more attention to HPE with each product rollout.  To those who have been associated with NonStop for a long time, the concept of hybrid IT isn’t anything new – surely, deploying a NonStop system as a payments switch in front of a Mainframe application and database is a good example of early adoption of hybrid IT, right?

However, for those who are new to the industry, hybrid IT is associated with traditional systems interacting with one or more private and / or public clouds. The modern take on hybrid IT is being fueled by the volume of data being generated and the acceptance of clouds as a good place to store data. But no matter how you look at it, there are ramifications for every application and whether it’s a simple case of just needing to replicate data to a D/R site or to integrate data with a data warehouse or data lake, software products are still needed for optimal deployment of NonStop in this more modern take on hybrid IT.

Just recently, in an article, it was noted that with HPE on a journey to hybrid IT, HPE was continuing to invest large sums of money in NonStop to make it less proprietary and more appealing to enterprises. NonStop today provides a number of options as to how and where it is deployed and this has all come about as HPE continues to pursue its main strategic objective of simplifying the transformation to hybrid IT – a hybrid world, in fact, where NonStop will not be an outsider, but to the contrary, NonStop will be an active participant.

Whether NonStop is running on a physical system or as a virtualized workload, transactions continue to be processed and data continues to be created. Not surprisingly, in this new open hybrid world, when it comes to moving data there is a strong chance that the target database will be something other than NonStop SQL. And for a product like DRNet, to be effective in hybrid IT, it needed to support NonStop AND open platforms! That is the reason why NTI elected to complement its NonStop product offering with support for Open Platforms and this includes Linux, Windows and Unix.

In a similar vein, in the most recent post to the LinkedIn blog, Pulse, you will read of how, according to Tim Dunne, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, NTI, “Unmistakably, NonStop is now part of the bigger journey that HPE has embarked upon as it fully embraces hybrid IT. DRNet is participating in this journey to hybrid IT, helping NonStop users exploit adjacent systems whether for replication or integration and whether those systems are mixes of different generations of NonStop or clouds.”

NTI has been participating in RUG events across America and members of the NonStop community have had ample opportunity to catch Tim at one event or another. Very soon, attention will turn to Europe and at the upcoming May, 2018, GTUG event to be held in Leipzig, given how HPE is promoting hybrid IT as strongly as it is today, NTI will be presenting more information on just how DRNet is ideally placed to support participation of NonStop within hybrid IT with the lowest TCO and the best ROI. Yes, it is a journey as HPE so rightly notes, but it isn’t a journey that you need to take on your own or where you need to mortgage all of IT to participate.

For more on the article published in the LinkedIn blog, Pulse, simply follow this link: NTI – it’s a hybrid IT world where DRNet contributes!

And watch for us at these upcoming RUG events as we won’t be hard to find. We will have updates for you on both DRNet and DRNet/OPEN as well as where we see NTI helping any NonStop user on the journey to hybrid IT. You will find us only too happy to discuss how best we can address your needs for data replication and data integration.
